Desultory and Disillusioned

Oh. Wow.

I love Cassie.  This character in the MTV version sort of sucks.  But this girl is the Luna Lovegood of eating disorders.  She’s so sweet and innocent and it’s completely fucked up that her parents are constantly fucking and she calls the fucking cabbie because he’s the only person in her life who actually listens to her.

Skins.

What is the deal with this show?

Ok so I accidentally watched the first episode of the MTV version thinking it was the E4 version.  Then I sought out the E4 version and watched that one.  Ok, here’s the thing, I think I liked the MTV version a skosh better, but here’s the mind-fuck: it doesn’t make any sense.  As an American show it doesn’t make any sense.  For starters our educational system is so different it doesn’t make any sense that Tony, Stan and Michelle could be at the school cafeteria at ten a.m. and actually be served food; the amount of freedom these kids have, based on the homelife we see in the first episode, also doesn’t make that much sense: they seem like solid middle class kids and they’re able to stay out all night sans repercussion? Not certain I would buy that in the States; also, the business with Tony manipulating his dad is just weird.

The MTV version was solid, sure, but it felt like those kids ought to have been in England.  Either I just didn’t know any kids like that growing up or they don’t exist.  I knew teenagers in England on the other hand who could easily be the kids in Skins.  I wonder what American teens think of the MTV show…
